Docket 97-NM-14-AD. \n\n\tApplicability: Model DC-10-10, DC-10-30, and DC-10-40 series airplanes, certificated in any category; as listed in the following McDonnell Douglas service bulletins: \n\nMcDonnell Douglas DC-10 Service Bulletin 57-78, Revision 1, dated August 26, 1986; \n\nMcDonnell Douglas DC-10 Service Bulletin 57-79, Revision 1, dated September 21, 1979, as revised by McDonnell Douglas DC-10 Service Bulletin Change Notification 57-79, dated January 23, 1980; and \n\nMcDonnell Douglas DC-10 Service Bulletin 57-82, dated February 19, 1980. \n\n\tNOTE 1: This AD applies to each airplane identified in the preceding applicability provision, regardless of whether it has been modified, altered, or repaired in the area subject to the requirements of this AD. For airplanes that have been modified, altered, or repaired so that the performance of the requirements of this AD is affected, the owner/operator must request approval foran alternative method of compliance in accordance with paragraph (g) of this AD. The request should include an assessment of the effect of the modification, alteration, or repair on the unsafe condition addressed by this AD; and, if the unsafe condition has not been eliminated, the request should include specific proposed actions to address it. \n\n\tCompliance: Required as indicated, unless accomplished previously. \n\n\tTo ensure that the main landing gear (MLG) separates from the wing when it is subjected to unpredictable overloads during abnormal operations, and to prevent consequent primary structural damage to the airplane, accomplish the following: \n\n\t(a)\tFor Model DC-10-10 series airplanes, as listed in McDonnell Douglas DC-10 Service Bulletin 57-78, Revision 1, dated August 26, 1986: Within 5 years after the effective date of this AD, accomplish the requirements of paragraphs (a)(1) and (a)(2) of this AD, in accordance with the service bulletin. \n\n\t\t(1)\tReplace 24 TL taper-lok attachments that attach the left and right MLG attach fitting assemblies on each wing with heat-treat TLH taper-lok attachments in accordance with the service bulletin. And \n\n\t\t(2)\tReplace each forward trunnion bolt on the left and right MLG of each wing with a "zero margin" trunnion bolt in accordance with the service bulletin. \n\n\tNOTE 2: Replacement of taper-lok attachments and forward trunnion bolts accomplished prior to the effective date of this AD in accordance with McDonnell Douglas DC-10 Service Bulletin 57-78, dated February 19, 1980, is considered acceptable for compliance with the requirements of paragraphs (a)(1) and (a)(2) of this AD. \n\n\t(b)\tFor Model DC-10-10 series airplanes, as listed in McDonnell Douglas DC-10 Service Bulletin 57-79, Revision 1, dated September 21, 1979, as revised by McDonnell Douglas DC-10 Service Bulletin Change Notification 57-79, dated January 23, 1980: Within 5 years after the effective date of this AD, replace each 1-1/2-inch-diameter bolt and bushing that attach the left and right MLG attach fitting and rear spar of each wing with a 1-1/4-inch-diameter bolt, and install bolt retainers, in accordance with the service bulletin and service bulletin change notification. \n\n\tNOTE 3: Replacement of 1-1/2-inch-diameter bolts and installation of bolt retainers prior to the effective date of this AD in accordance with McDonnell Douglas DC-10 Service Bulletin 57-79, dated June 5, 1979, are considered acceptable for compliance with the requirements of paragraph (b) of this AD. \n\n\t(c)\tFor Model DC-10-30 and DC-10-40 series airplanes: Except as provided by paragraph (d) of this AD, within 5 years after the effective date of this AD, accomplish the requirements of paragraph (c)(1) or (c)(2) of this AD, as applicable, in accordance with McDonnell Douglas DC-10 Service Bulletin 57-82, dated February 19, 1980. \n\n\t\t(1)\tFor airplanes identified as Groups I and II in the service bulletin: Replace each forward trunnion bolt on the left and right MLG of each wing with a "zero margin" forward trunnion bolt; replace each 1-1/2-inch-diameter bolt and bushing that attach the left and right MLG attach fitting and rear spar of each wing with a 1-1/4-inch-diameter bolt, and install bolt retainers, in accordance with the service bulletin. \n\n\t\t(2)\tFor airplanes identified as Group III in the service bulletin: Replace each forward trunnion bolt on the left and right MLG of each wing with a "zero margin" trunnion bolt in accordance with the service bulletin. \n\n\t(d)\tFor Model DC-10-30 and DC-10-40 series airplanes: Installation of a trunnion bolt having part number (P/N) ARG7558-501 or P/N ARG7558-507 on the MLG, in accordance with AD 96-03-05, amendment 39-9502, constitutes terminating action for the requirement to replace the trunnion bolts for that landing gear, as required in paragraphs (c)(1) and (c)(2) of this AD. \n\n\t(e)\tFor Model DC-10-30 and DC-10-40 series airplanes: Replacement of the trunnion bolts with a serviceable part in accordance with paragraph (c)(1)(ii)(B) of AD 96-03-05, amendment 39-9502, constitutes terminating action for the requirement to replace the trunnion bolts, as required in paragraphs (c)(1) and (c)(2) of this AD. \n\n\t(f)\tFor Model DC-10-10 series airplanes: Replacement of the trunnion bolts with a serviceable part in accordance with paragraph (a)(1)(ii)(B) of AD 96-16-01, amendment 39-9701, constitutes terminating action for the requirement to replace the trunnion bolts, as required in paragraph (a)(2) of this AD. \n\n\t(g)\tAn alternative method of compliance or adjustment of the compliance time that provides an acceptable level of safety may be used if approved by the Manager, Los Angeles Aircraft Certification Office (ACO), FAA, Transport Airplane Directorate. Operators shall submit their requests through an appropriate FAA Principal Maintenance Inspector, who may add comments and then send it to the Manager, Los Angeles ACO. \n\n\tNOTE 4: Informationconcerning the existence of approved alternative methods of compliance with this AD, if any, may be obtained from the Los Angeles ACO. \n\n\t(h)\tSpecial flight permits may be issued in accordance with sections 21.197 and 21.199 of the Federal Aviation Regulations (14 CFR 21.197 and 21.199) to operate the airplane to a location where the requirements of this AD can be accomplished. \n\n\t(i)\tThe actions shall be done in accordance with McDonnell Douglas DC-10 Service Bulletin 57-78, Revision 1, dated August 26, 1986; McDonnell Douglas DC-10 Service Bulletin 57-79, Revision 1, dated September 21, 1979, as revised by McDonnell Douglas DC-10 Service Bulletin Change Notification 57-79, dated January 23, 1980; and McDonnell Douglas DC-10 Service Bulletin 57-82, dated February 19, 1980. This incorporation by reference was approved by the Director of the Federal Register in accordance with 5 U.S.C. 552(a) and 1 CFR part 51.
