86-10-10 BOEING: Amendment 39-5318. Applies to all Model 747 series airplanes, line number 1 through 607, certificated in any category. To prevent failure of the engine thrust control cable and loss of control of an engine, accomplish the following: \n\n\tA.\tWithin the next 10 days after the effective date of this AD, unless accomplished within the last 3,000 hours, inspect and, if necessary, replace the engine thrust control cables in accordance with Boeing Alert Service Bulletin 747-76A2065, dated February 28, 1986, or later FAA-approved revision. \n\n\tB.\tInspections and replacement of thrust control cables accomplished in accordance with Boeing Service Letter 747-SL-76-15-A, dated December 19, 1985, are considered equivalent to accomplishing the procedures required by paragraph A., above, except that corroded cables, with or without broken strands, must also be replaced. \n\n\tC.\tReport results of inspections and the time intervals between the inspections to the FAA, Northwest Mountain Region, Seattle Aircraft Certification Office, Propulsion Branch, Attention: Mr. Kanji K. Patel, ANM-140S, 17900 Pacific Highway South, C-68966, Seattle, Washington 98168; telephone (206) 431-2973. \n\n\tD.\tAn alternate means of compliance or adjustment of the compliance time, which provides an acceptable level of safety, may be used when approved by the Manager, Seattle Aircraft Certification Office, FAA, Northwest Mountain Region. \n\n\tE.\tSpecial flight permits may be issued in accordance with FAR 21.197 and 21.199 to operate airplanes to a base for the accomplishment of inspections and/or modifications required by this AD. \n\n\tAll persons affected by this directive who have not already received the appropriate service bulletin from the manufacturer may obtain copies upon request to the Boeing Commercial Airplane Company, P.O. Box 3707, Seattle, Washington 98124.
