We are adopting a new airworthiness directive (AD) for the products listed above. This AD requires installing new fire handle shutoff system wiring. This AD was prompted by a possible latent failure in the fire handle shutoff relay circuit due to a lack of separation between engine wires. We are issuing this AD to minimize the possibility of a multiple engine shutdown due to single fire handle activation.

We are proposing this AD to minimize the possibility of a multiple engine shutdown due to single fire handle activation. \n\nCompliance \n\n\n\t(f) Comply with this AD within the compliance times specified, unless already done. \n\nWire Installation \n\n\n\t(g) Within 4,200 flight hours after the effective date of this AD, install new fire handle shutoffsystem wiring, in accordance with the Accomplishment Instructions of Boeing Alert Service Bulletin MD90-74A002, dated August 17, 2010. \n\nAlternative Methods of Compliance (AMOCs) \n\n\n\t(h)(1) The Manager, Los Angeles Aircraft Certification Office, FAA, has the authority to approve AMOCs for this AD, if requested using the procedures found in 14 CFR 39.19. In accordance with 14 CFR 39.19, send your request to your principal inspector or local Flight Standards District Office, as appropriate. If sending information directly to the manager of the ACO, send it to the attention of the person identified in the Related Information section of this AD. \n\t(2) Before using any approved AMOC, notify your appropriate principal inspector, or lacking a principal inspector, the manager of the local flight standards district office/certificate holding district office. \n\nRelated Information \n\n\n\t(i) For more information about this AD, contact William S. Discussion \n\n\n\tWe issued a notice of proposed rulemaking (NPRM) to amend 14 CFR part 39 to include an airworthiness directive (AD) that would apply to the specified products. That NPRM published in the Federal Register on November 5, 2010 (75 FR 68245). That NPRM proposed to require installing new fire handle shutoff system wiring. \n\nComments \n\n\n\tWe gave the public the opportunity to participate in developing this AD. We received no comments on the NPRM or on the determination of the cost to the public. \n\nExplanation of Change Made to the AD \n\n\n\tWe have revised this AD to identify the legal name of the manufacturer as published in the most recent type certificate data sheet for the affected airplane models. \n\nConclusion \n\n\n\tWe reviewed the relevant data and determined that air safety and the public interest require adopting the AD with the change described previously. Subtitle I, section 106, describes the authority of the FAA Administrator.
